In the torrent

In this weekend, I went to dive at the river in Yamaguchi pref. Main purpose is to see spawning of Red-spotted masu salmon. Now is close to the end of season. And if I miss it, I need to wait one year. Thus, there was no reason for me not to go there.

And I saw mature female of the salmon! However, I could not take the photo of male with a turned‐up chin.. Due to the strong current, I even could not approach the male under the water.
...This may be a subject for next year.

Female of Red-spotted masu salmon.

Aged Red-spotted masu trout.

Due to the strong halation, quality is not good. But below seems to be mature male of Red-spotted masu trout with mating color. The place I took this photo has barrier to control soil erosion in the upper area. And the rise of a river flew out enormous volume of the sand to down stream with strong current. Actually it exhausted me entirely.

Japanese Giant Salamander. This was my first time to see adult!! It looked dignified very much.

Then Liobagrus reini.

Forktail bullhead. I hardly imagine this fish inhabit in the higher part of the river. Also this was my first time to take photo of this fish and I was very excited!

So I really enjoyed watching freshwater fish and animals in Yamaguchi!!

Northern Queensland6: Mammals in daytime

Today's theme is mammals I saw in daytime.

First mammal is Musky Rat-kangaroo. When I first saw them, I thought it a kind of rat.

But,, they are one of marsupials. Body length was about 15cm, and they are smallest kangaroo. I saw them in the yard of Cassowary house where I stayed for several days.

They inhabit in the limited area within 150-200km from Cairns.
By the way, below photo may remind this animal is a Kangaroo.. ...do not??

Here is Spectacled Flying-fox. Their face looks like a dog, isn't it?

Platypus. As I wrote before, they are active even in daytime in Queensland.

Most of them were not careful at all, and I sometimes saw them swimming just a few feet away from me.

Anyway how humorous their face is! They look shy, but some of them are so curious they sometimes come close whey people are working along with the river.

Next is Agile Wallaby. The mammals which I saw the most during this travel.

Since they are not so big, even adult look lovely. However, they were so shy that I could not come close to them. Especially those who were in open space kept certain distance between me.

They are also nocturnal animal, and I saw many of them food in early morning and late afternoon. During watching them, I noticed their eye are not so good! When I sat down on my heels and walked closer to them among the bush, they often look to direction where I was. But they seemed not recognize me as a human and did not run away! like below photo.

Next is Eastern Grey Kangaroo. Similar species whose name is 'Western' Grey Kangaroo inhabit in South Australia and West Australia and I was familiar to see Western. Thus, I thought Eastern looks similar with Western.

However, when I first saw Eastern, they looked not so lovely :p   One reason was the size of the body. They are so big! I heard they are second biggest Kangaroo. In addition, their behavior associated me with somewhat aged.

As a reference, I am attaching photo of Western which I took in South Australia.

I still keep on! Next is Mareeba Rock Wallaby.

As is easy to imagine, Rock Wallaby is a kind of Wallaby which live in rocky place. And all of them I have seen in the past were so shy. But, here, they were not, at all.

I visited the place in daytime. Since this wallaby is also nocturnal, all of them looked so sleepy. Actually Watching them for certain times made me sleepy :-)

The only one which was active was Joey in Mom's pouch! He or she was always looking out side from pouch. How lovely are they!

Do you know an animal whose name is Quoll?
I first knew the existence of the animal last year. Unfortunately, I only saw footprint...
But the guide informed me good place to see them in Tasmania. So I am thinking to visit there in near future!

Last photo is a dog I met in famous bird lodge. She was so gentle and friendly. In this bird lodge, I saw one more dog.
When I walked around the pond which was close to the lodge, both of them followed us. It looked they tried to guide us to prevent us loss our way to the lodge. Uuum, they were very sagacious!

Northern Queensland5: Raptores 3rd

Today is the third time (or final) for Raptores. Main bird in this time is a kind of owl.

Southern Boobook. These two photos were taken under the eaves of cottage. It sometimes opened the eye,, but was sleeping most of time.

It was early afternoon and I guess it was so sleepy. In the late afternoon, I saw a kind of honeyeater was mobbing to the owl. When the guide explained about it to me, I felt somewhat strange, since I first learned the behavior 'Mobbing' during scuba diving and thought it was specific to fish. (:-)

The cottages were surrounded by eucalyptus forest. And I saw some owls were in the hollow of the tree.

It looks better as a photo to have natural objects behind the bird.

In this small hollow, I saw three owls. How big the hollow was!

I heard most of eucalyptus were eaten by termite. And inside of the tree becomes hollow. Thus, size of hollow is usually much bigger than it looks.

Barking Owl. Though I could not see the bird in short distance, I was still happy to see it. Because I have not seen so many wild owls in the past..

Finally, I am putting photos of two more species of Raptores.
Pair of osprey, though quality of the photo is very poor :p

Brahminy kite. This is one of the birds which I wanted to see.

White colored head and chest, and reddish brown wings. They are characteristic.

A pair was nesting on the top of high tree. so that I could not see them in short distance. I really want to get bigger lens. such as 600mm or 800mm ;-)

During this trip, I saw other species of Raptores. Since I could not take good shot of them, I will skip them.
Continue.

Northern Queensland4: Raptores 2nd

I will continue to show Raptores' photo, though I already don't have so many stock of photos..
Below is Pacific Baza.

When I was moving by car, I saw falcon like bird was flying to the tree. Then, we got out the car and came close to the bird which was on the tree. To say honestly, I expected the bird would soon fly away.

But the bird did not move at all, even I and guide came closer. Then I found the bird was eating lunch. (Its lunch was a kind of grasshopper.)

This bird was not so big, but its lunch grasshopper was quite big enough, and it took certain time to eat all.

After for a while, another bird flew close to the bird. How lucky I was!!! As Japanese name of this bird contains the word 'Cuckoo', stripe patter on the chest was beautiful.

Next bird is.........Red Goshawk!!!!! 's nest. :p   Red Goshawk was one of the top of my list to see in this trip. However, they were not active for nesting at that time, and its nest was empty. Since it is nature, there is no way. I wish to see them in next trip.

Though not good photo, this is Black-breasted Buzzard. During drive back to Cairns, the guide suddenly stopped the car and told me it was flying over the car. Unfortunately, the bird was already far away and flying away.. Next time...

Mid of Sep in northern Australia is late stage of dry season. Thus, everywhere was dried up. Especially glasses in dry forest was turned brown, and seemed very easy to burn.
And I often saw bush fire, though I had no idea whether it was caused by nature or human.

Unexpectedly, I often saw Raptores was flying close to the fire. This was because they tried to catch small animals (such as grasshopper and lizard) which ran about to escape from fire. I used to think animals hate fire, this was surprising to me.
By the way, trees and glasses in eucalyptus forest are not completely burned by bush fire. After two weeks later from fire, trees and glasses sprout at the same time and forest is colored in green. During my stay, I saw some patches of forest were colored in bright green. So this indicates that some bush fire were there a few weeks before.
In Japan, I used to associate sprout with spring. How different it is in different place.

This is also not a good photo, brown falcon on the anthill which looks stone, but not.

Today is last bird is Whistling Kite which I often saw in Northern Territory in the past.

This bird was nesting. This nest was on the tree just next to the path.

Another Whistling kite which I saw in late afternoon. When I found this bird, it was eating road kill.
