きっかけは去年、写真家の寺沢孝毅さんの写真集「寒流が結ぶ生命」を目にしたからでした。北海道からベーリング海に生きる生物達の素晴らしい写真が満載なのですが、その中にこの島の写真があったのです。
最初に写真を見た時、これは日本ではないと思いました。それは、「こんな場所は日本にはないだろう」と思うような光景だったからです。でも、、撮影地を見てビックリ！それが天売島だったのです。そんな訳で「一度は行きたい」と思ったのでした。
Last weekend, I had a weekend trip to Teuri island in north Hokkaido. The reason why I went to this island was I saw photo works by Mr. Takaki Terasawa (Professional photographer). The photo books had plenty of great photos of wildlife which were taken from Hokkaido to Bering Sea. And I found several photos in this island.
When I first saw it, I though they were not taken in Japan, since scenery was quite different from what I knew in Japan. (looks more like northern island in polar region) But it was indeed taken in Teuri island which was surprising for me. For this reason, I longed to visit this island.
さて、、こちらは写真集にも写真が掲載されているウトウという鳥です。天売島には世界最大のコロニーがあり、繁殖期になると60万羽ものウトウ達が子育てにやってきます。
Below is a photo of Rhinoceros Auklet. Teuri island has world largest colony of this bird. During breeding season, more than 600,000 birds come to this island.
さて、天売島は道北/羽幌の沖合に浮かぶ島です。隣には似たような大きさの焼尻島がありますが、どちらも日本海に浮かぶ小さな島です。
下の写真ですが、手前に写っているのが焼尻島、右奥に見えるのが天売島です。
Teuri island is situated offshore of Haboro in north part of Hokkaido. Next to this island, there is another island (Yagishiri island). But both of them are small island in Japan sea.
In below photo, the island in the center is Yagishi island. and island in inner right is Teuri island.
こちらは天売島の港。島へのアクセスは羽幌から船を利用する事になります。
Here is the port of Teuri island. The only access to this is island to take a boat from Haboro.
島に到着後、チャリを借りて島内を巡りました。周囲12km程度の島ですが、意外な程起伏が激しくかなり大変でした。
After arriving the island, I rent a bicycle and went around the island. Though it is such a small island whose circumference is about 12 km, there are many steep ups and downs, and it was harder to go with bicycle.
島の西～北部は断崖に覆われていて、ここに海鳥達が多数子育てをしています。昼間、一番目についたのがこちらのウミネコ。下の写真に見える小さな点々は全てウミネコです
West to North part of the island is surround by the cliff, and many seabirds breed here. In the day time, I watched many Common Gulls. The all white/black spots in below photo are Common Gulls.
島の北部には木も殆ど生えておらず、緑の丘が広がっていました。何となくアイスランドを彷彿させる光景です。
North part of the island was covered with grass. And its scenery reminds me Iceland.
沖合に目を向けると利尻島の姿も。
When I looked further offshore, I found Rishiri island.
草原にはエゾゼンテイカ（エゾカンゾウ）が花を咲かせていました。
In the grassland, many Daylily (Hemerocallis middendorffii var. esculenta) was blooming.
これで青空だったら最高だったのですが。。
If the sky was blue, it would be much better...
少し木が生えている場所ではチシマフウロも花を咲かせていました。綺麗ですね。
In the area, where some trees were found, Wild Geranium Cranesbill was start blooming.
そして日没。この時間に島西部の崖近くに行くと上空を凄い数の鳥が飛んでいました。ここで見えている鳥の大半はウミネコやオオセグロカモメです。
Around sunset, so many birds were flying over in the west part of the island. Most of birds in below were Common Gull and Kelp Gull.
何故か？ それは日没後にウトウの大群が巣に戻って来て雛に餌をやるのですが、ウトウが捕まえてきた魚を横取りしようとしているのです。
Why? It is simply because they try to steal fishes which Rhinoceros Auklet bring back to the nest for their chicks after sunset.
さて、、このウトウ、最初はポツポツとウトウが着地して巣穴に入って行きましたが、暗くなるにつれてウトウの数はさらに増加！そこらじゅうでウトウが飛び降りてきて巣に向かっていました！！！ 圧巻なのはその数！
Just after sunset, Rhinoceros Auklet started flying back to the nest. As it got darker, more and more birds were flying back!!! Eventually huge number of birds were flying over the ground. It was amazing view!!!
小さな島全体で60万羽もいるので当然のなのかもしれませんが、、とにかく凄い光景でした。
終いには雛に餌をやり終えたウトウが別のウトウから魚を奪おうとしたりと・・・大騒動になっていました(笑)
Since 600,000 of birds are breeding in this small island, it may be no surprise.. but very fantastic. Some birds which already feed their chicks tried to steal fishes from others and it seemed like under big confusion.
現地のルールにより観察できるのは夜8時までなのですが、8時頃には相当な数のウトウ達が地面の上を歩き回っていました。いや～こんな場所が日本にもあるんですね！！！ 驚きました！
By the rule, visitor can watch them until 8 pm around the colony. Around 8 pm, great number of them were walking on the ground. I hardly imagined such a island exists in Japan!!!
さて、、天売島にはウトウ、ウミネコ以外にもウミガラス、ケイマフリと言った海鳥が見られるのですが、こちらを見るには船で崖沿いを進む必要があります。生憎、この日は船がでなかったので、これらの鳥たちを見ることはできませんでした。でも、、ウトウだけでも十分すぎるインパクトがありました。
明けて日曜日、この日は島に広がる草原を中心に歩き回り鳥や花を観察してました。
In Teuri island, not only Rhinoceros Auklet and Common Gulls but also others such as Common Murre and Spectacled Guillemot inhabit. To see them, it is necessary to go along with the cliff by taking a boat. Unfortunately, I could not take it and thus not see them. But I was quite happy to see Rhinoceros Auklet.
On next day (Sunday), I walked in the grassland and watched birds and flowers.
こちらはエゾスカシユリ。
Asiatic lilies
夏の北海道の草原と言えば定番のノゴマ。あちこちにいました。
Siberian rubythroat. Popular bird in Hokkaido in the summer. I watched many of them.
コヨシキリ。こちらも沢山観察できました。
Schrenk's Reed Warbler.
今回、蘭の仲間も色々と見かけました。こちらはアオチドリ。こんな風に草原の中にひっそりと花を咲かせていました。
During the walking in grassland, I found some orchid. Below is Coeloglossum viride var.bracteatum. It bloomed like below among the grasses.

森に近い場所ではハクサンチドリも花を咲かせていました。
I also found Common spotted orchid in the edge of the forest.
ちょっと雰囲気が違いますが、こちらも同種でしょうかね？

花の上にハナカミキリらしき昆虫も見られました。週末のみ旅行だったので、昼過ぎで観察は切り上げ、船、高速バス、電車、飛行機、更に電車を乗り継いで奈良に戻りました。非常にいい場所だったので、次回は時間をかけて訪れたいです。
A kind of Lepturinae? on the flower. Since it was weekend trip, I stopped watching in early afternoon. Then I went back to Nara by taking a boat, highway bus, train, airplane and train again. Since the scenery in the island was very good, I wan to stay longer next time.
今日の最後の写真ですが、、こちらは島内に残る鰊番屋です。昔は鰊が沢山取れたって事なんでしょうね。
Today's last photo is herring fisherman's house which still remain in the island.
