Rio Xingu: Freshwater Stingray

On the last day to dive in Xingu, I found black and white object among the sand, when I searched for fish between the rocks.

「なんやろ~?」と思って棒を使って砂をかき分けていくと、、、、、目が合いました (^^;
What is it? I swept way the sands with a stick, then my eye met with fish's eye :-)
Wow!!!! Polka Dot Rays (Potamotrygon leopoldi)!!!!!!!!

Then, I found one of the most beautiful freshwater stingray in Amazon. Diameter of the disc was around 20cm and it seemed to be just born. But design was almost same with adult.

White spots were scattered in black and it looked chic and beautiful. I hardly imagined to watch wild fish in natural habitat. I was sooooooo lucky!

By the way, I also watched Ocellate river stingray in Xingu. Though I could not take a photo, it seemed number of stingray was considerable here.
As they like to rest in a shallow sandy area, local people sometimes steps on it. What is the issue is they have sting and they often stick it to people's leg and gives acute pain...
For this reason, the most dangerous fish which local people think is neither piranha nor Candiru, but stingray.

Here is a close-up photo of the sting. I was so careful to take away sands...

Rio Xingu: Apistogramma

Next fish is Apistogramma.
Apistogramma is a group of Cichlid which inhabits in the South American Continent. They are small fish and many of them are very beautiful. When I was a student, I was enthusiastic to breed several species of Apistogramma. Therefore I dreamed to watch wild fish in natural environment.

The first Apistogramma I watched was below fish. It was in the shade with a lot of fallen leaves where small yellow fish was watching me. Just a few second later, I felt adrenalin went around my body and getting excited. Yes!! It was a female of Apistogramma!!!

After letting myself calm, I watched around and found male. It seems Apistogramma pulchra, though shape of the tail was not very round.
Anyway, it was much more beautiful and impressive than the fish in aquarium.

It seemed each male has vast territory, and I found few beautiful males. But I watched several yellow females in a small area. Usually, color of female is not so yellowish like below, and I wondered another possibility.

As suspected, I found these females were with fry. How lucky I was!
Fish in below two photos is not identical, but you can see both females are with several fry. Can you find them?

After then, I swam in another area where are many water plants. I also found some A. pulchra. It seemed the number of fish was not so much, but certain number of fish  would inhabit in the area where condition meets.

Here, I also found female with fry.
By the way, there were plenty of water plants such as Cabomba, Hair grass and Nymphaea in this place and scenery was so beautiful.

And I found strange Apistogramma here. I don't think this is A. pulchra, since there is a lateral band at the base of caudal fin. When I first watched this fish, I wonder this may be A. juruensis or A. cacatuoides, though I was informed this type of group does not inhabit in the area.

It was only a day when I could watch Apistogramma, but it was a wonderful.
Since it is special fish for me, I want to see them again!!

Rio Xingu: Pleco #1

From now on, I will put photos of fish I watched in Amazon per species.
First fish is Gold Nugget pleco which was most impressive for me. (Pleco is a kind of catfish which is widely spread in Latin America.)
This pleco is endemic to Rio Xingu and I saw plenty of them.
Since I watched many stages of fish, I will put photo of them.

Here is the biggest fish I took there. Body length was around 20cm.

Next is smallest one. As you can see, size of the spot relatively larger than bigger fish and its color is rather yellow than orange.

Once the fish grow up, fish has more spots and its color is getting orange. I don't remember exactly, but size was around 2 - 3 cm.

Once it grow up more (around 6 -7 cm), the body looks more colorful.

Bigger fish (body length 10 - 12 cm). Many of them with this size were beautiful. However, many of them were so shy to it was harder to take photo.

Though color is not good, here is bigger than previous. Body length was around 15 cm. Most of fish with this size has smaller spot comparing with the body size and its color gets somber.

最初の写真より大型の個体ですが、、どれも警戒心が非常に高くて全く撮影できませんでした。因みに大きくなると色もくすんできて、綺麗でなくなります (^^;
I watched much bigger fish. But they were so shy that I could not take any photo. By the way, color of bigger fish are more somber and they are not so photogenic ;-)

I had impression that bigger fish are much more shy than smaller ones. Also, since they are nocturnal, they are fundamentally shy in the daytime.
In the very late afternoon, I watched many of them got out of the crack of stones and started to eat algae. Therefore, the best way to watch and take photo of them is to find good place in daytime, and enter the river just before sunset. Of course, I don't think it good to spot strong torch, but to use weak or red torch would be better.

Next time, I will try these idea.

Fish watching in Amazon!!

During my summer vacation, I traveled in Amazon which I dreamed of for a long time. The purpose is to watch and take photo of freshwater fishes in Amazon!!!
Indeed, I saw many kinds of fish. What I was happy the most was to watch fish which belongs to genus Apistogramma and I bred in the past. The popular Apistogramm in the area where I dived was Apistogramma pulchra, but I saw some strangers.

やはり・・・アマゾンまでは遠いです (^^;
As usual, I am listing my path to Amazon. From Japan, I flew to São Paulo via Frankfurt. After immigration, I flew to Maraba via Brasilia. After diving in Rio Tocantins, I moved to Altamira by bus through Trans-Amazonian Highway. Here in Altamira I spent a few days to dive in Rio Xingu and Igrape (small stream) around the city.
Then, I took a bus back to Maraba and flew back to Japan via Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Frankfurt.
It was a long way to Amazon.

I saw awesome view under the water. From now on, I will show photos of them.
Gold Nugget pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus). As always, wild fish in the nature is beautiful.

Matsu Bussy (Ancistrus ranunculus). This is a kind of pleco as good as Gold Nuget pleco.
I have seen these plecos in aquarium shop in the past, but wild fish looks powerful.

Bussy mouth pleco. To be honest, I am not very sure for the detail, since so many kinds of plecos inhabit in Amazon.
By the way, to search for and take photo of pleco was much harder than expected. It is something like searching for salamanders under the stone.
Since they are nocturnal and hid between stones, it is necessary to turn over stones. Since I had to hold my camera in the housing, I could use only one hand to do it. The river flowed fast, stone was heavy, pleco liked to run away to darker place.... so that taking photo was little bit hard.

Other than pleco, I saw many kinds of fish.
Here is Giant Trahira (Hoplias macrophthalmus). It was juvenile, but it had big presence.

A kind of Cichlid. Probably Geophagus surinamensis. This fish was also much beautiful than the fish in the aquarium.
I took this photo in the mainstream of Rio Xingu. By using fisheye lens, I came very closer to the fish. But, as you can see, many floating matters are seen in the photo. It was tough to take photo in this situation. (but fun)

A kind of Tetra in Rio Tocantins.
Since July is little earlier before visibility of the water is getting better, visibility in the big river was not very good. Even with 40mm Macro lens, to take photo of small fish was difficult.
Sep and Oct is the best month for visibility, I want to come back here in either of the month.

Another kind of Tetra which I took in Igarape which flows into Rio Xingu. Though the color of the water was stained, visibility was good, and it was easier to take photo.
During the month when visibility of big river is not good, it seems better to spend time longer in Igrape for photography.

I will continue introducing many fishes!
