Falkland Islands 2012: Summary

1/10の朝、フォークランドより大阪に戻ってきました。　去年は一週間滞在したものの「時間が足りないな」と感じたので今回は二週間滞在しました・・・が、、それでも時間が足りなかったです(笑)
前回と同様、大自然を満喫したのは勿論、色々な人といい出会いがあり非常に楽しかったです♪
On Jan 10, I came back to Osaka from Falkland Islands. In this trip I stayed there for two weeks, since I felt it too short to stay there for a week during my travel last year. However, I still felt two weeks is still too short.
Anyway, I enjoyed watching various species of wildlife and also meeting with nice people.

今回、フォークランドではカラカス島、ウェストポイント島、シーライオン島、ソーンダース島、ボランティアポイント、スタンレー、ケープ・ブーゲンビルを訪れました。
位置関係はこんな感じです。
In this travel, I visited Carcass island, Westpoint island, Sealion island, Saunders island, Volunteer point, Stanley and Cape Bougainville. For location of each place, see below picture.

これから写真を整理して掲載していきますが、まずは何枚か簡単に紹介しますね。
I just started to check my photos. For time being, I am putting some photos.

カラカス島の海岸。白い砂、青い海、、コレだけ見ると暖かい場所と勘違いしそうですが、、海の水は冷たく、風が強い事も手伝って陸上も寒いです。
Coastline in Carcass island. White sand, blue sea... it looks like somewhere in tropical island, but sea water was very cold, and due to strong wind, air temperature was also not high.

海岸には、マゼランペンギンの姿が。
On the coast, Magellanic penguins were resting.

マゼランペンギンはかなりポピュラーなペンギンで個体数も多く、至る場所でごく普通に観察できます。他のペンギンと比べるとかなり臆病ですが。。＠シーライオン島
In Falkland islands, Magellanic Penguin is quite popular and can be seen in many places. However they are very shy and they often run away even though I did not come closer. Below photo was taken in Sealion island.

赤い喉が特徴的なLong-tailed Medowlark＠カラカス島。フォークランド固有の鳥です。

今回も多数のアホウドリに会ってきました。こちらはマユグロアホウドリ＠ウェストポイント島
In this trip, I watched enormous number of Albatross. Here is a colony of Black Browed Albatross@Westpoint island.

この島ではマユグロアホウドリとイワトビペンギンが同じ場所で営巣しています。同種間での喧嘩は割と普通に、そして異種間でも時々諍いが起こっていました^^
In this island, Black Browed Albatross and Rockhopper penguin breed at the same place. It was popular to see the fight among same species , but sometime albatross and penguin were fighting each other.

こちらはイワトビペンギン。
陸上ではノロノロとした動きをしていますが、水中では俊敏そのもの。以下の写真二枚は何れもソーンダース島で撮影してます
Rockhopper penguin@Saunders island. On the ground, their movement is slow. But, in the water, they are very quick.

シーライオン島では、偶然、色素異常の雛も見つけることが出来ました。通常、雛の頭と翼は灰褐色をしていますが、ご覧の通り白が混じっていて、一見して判別できました。
In Sealion island, I happened to find pigment anomaly chick. Normally, Rockhopper chick's head and wings are colored greyish brown. As you can see, this chick has white head and wings.

今回は動画撮影の為に三脚もわざわざ持っていったので、色々と撮ってきました。こちらはシャワーを浴びるイワトビペンギン＠ソーンダース島♪

My通称「暇人」のフォークランドカラカラ＠シーライオン島。好奇心が強く、目を離すと人の荷物にいたずらするのも相変わらずでした(笑)　因みに右下に移っているのは僕の三脚です
Striated Caracara which I personally call bird of leisure ;-)  Since they are very curious, they often tried to touch with my baggage as they did during my last trip. In below scene, he (?) tried to steal my tripod.

飛べないフォークランド固有の鴨の仲間、Falkland Flightless Steamer Duck＠シーライオン島。この時は親子で日向ぼっこをしていました。早く泳ぐためだと思いますが、小さな翼の一部には羽根がついていません。
Endemic flightless duck in Falkland. Falkland Flightless Steamer Duck @Sealion island. At this time, a family enjoyed sunbathing. What is remarkable is they don't have feather in a part of their small wings, which I guess this is to swim faster.

ミナミゾウアザラシの赤ちゃん＠シーライオン島。ちょっと成長していますが、まん丸な目で見つめられると、思わず笑みがこぼれてしまいます。
Pup of Southern elephant seal @Sealion island. He or she is no longer newborn baby, but still very cute. When my eye met his or hers, I could not stop smiling.

こちらは、、オタリアの家族＠シーライオン島。真ん中に見えている黒い物体が赤ちゃんです。僕が訪れた時は赤ちゃんが６頭いましたが、その数日後、メスが次々と出産したそうで、一気に20頭以上に増えたとか。。見たかったなぁ
Family of South Sea Lion @Sealion island. Black object in the center of the photo is pup. When I visited this point, I saw 6 pups. Afterward I heard from other tourists that many females landed and gave birth some days later and number of pups became more than 20. Oh boy...

マゼランカモメ＠シーライオン島。夏真っ盛りだった事もあり、色々な鳥が子育てをしているのを見かけました。どんな鳥も雛を見ていると和みます♪
Dolphin gull @Sealion island. In this trip, I watched many birds were breeding. As always, to watch chick makes me smile.

チャイロオオトウゾクカモメ＠カラカス島。こちらは繁殖が始まったばかりのようで、、抱卵している個体をちょくちょく見かけました。
Falkland Skua @Carcass island. I did not see chick of this bird, but watched they were incubating and often threatening any birds which came closer to their nest.

ハラジロカマイルカ＠ソーンダース島。写真は撮れませんでしたが、フォークランドでは結構イロワケイルカを見かけました。カラカス島からウェストポイント島を結ぶ船上では暫く船と併走してくれました。
Dusky dolphin @Sunders island. One of the common dolphin in Falkland was Commerson's dolphin which I could not take photo. When I took a boat from Caracass island to Westpoint island, I watched they were swimming parallel with boat.

ジェンツーペンギン。フォークランドでは個体数の多いペンギンです。
以下の写真はボランティアポイントで上陸しようとしているシーンです。
Gentoo penguin @Volunteer point. This penguin is one the popular penguin in Falkland islands.
Below shot is a scene they are about to land at the shore.

ソーンダース島にて。ちょうど雛に餌を与えているシーンですが、、何度も何度も雛が親に餌をねだるので、見ていてちょっと気の毒に思えました(笑)　体を張って子育てしているな～って。
@Saunders island. This is the scene parent feeds chick. Since this seems tough and chick continuously coax parent to feed, I feel sorry for parent ;-) To bring up chick is hard work.

セアカノスリ＠ソーンダース島。英名でVariable Hawkと言いますが、名前の通り色彩変異が多く、僕が見たのは茶色味の強い個体でした。至近距離で見れて大感激！
Variable hawk @Saunders island. As English name says, this bird has various color morph and this  bird is brownish type. Anyway, I watched them in close distance and was very happy.

オウサマペンギン＠ボランティアポイント。去年は時間がなくて行けなかった場所ですが、噂どおり凄い場所でした。1000ペアがここで繁殖しているそうで、どこを見てもオウサマだらけ！状態でした♪
King Penguin @Volunteer point. Volunteer point is a place where I could not go last time. As I heard, it was fantastic place! Currently 1000 pair were breeding here. I was completely surrounded by Kings in all direction.

フォークランドでは珍しいマカロニペンギン＠ケープ ブーゲンビル。フォークランドでは基本的に繁殖はしてないようで、時々イワトビペンギンのルッカリーの中に一羽が見つかる･･･そんな感じです。ラッキーな事に今回は3羽見ることができました♪
Macaroni Penguin @Cape Bougainville. Macaroni Penguin is not popular penguin in Falkland and do not breed here. One or two penguins are occasionally found in Rockhopper's colony. Luckily I found three Macaronis here.

イワトビペンギンに似た感じですが、冠羽がもっと長くて色も黄金色、そして額で繋がっています。ピンクの嘴と言い、ゴージャスな感じです。
At a glance, they look like Rockhopper penguin. But Macaroni's crest feather is longer, its color is gold (Rockhopper is rather yellow) and crest feather is connected. With their pink beak, they look gorgeous.

サヤハシチドリ＠シーライオン島。フォークランドより更に南極に近い場所で見られる事の多い鳥だと思っていたので、よもや観察できるとは思っていませんでした。雪のように真っ白な体が印象的ですね。
Snowy Sheathbill @Sealion island. Since I thought this bird inhabit more southern area where are closer to Antarctica, I did not image to be able to see them in Falkland. Their body is entirely white and very impressive.

今回、写真を1万枚以上撮ったので、整理には時間がかかるかと思いますが、随時紹介していきますね！

FI: Kingdom of Animal ~Albatross~

だいぶ間が空いてしまいましたが、、フォークランド諸島の話の続きを書いていきます。
(前回までの話はコチラ)
ソーンダース島にある飛行機が発着する草っぱらからオフロードを車で小一時間ほど走ると、、そこは大自然の真っ只中。時折放牧されている羊が目に入りますが、それ以外には人の影響を感じさせるものは何もありません。
Long time has passed, since I talked about Falkland Islands. Now I resume it. (For previous topic, click here)
1hour drive on rough road from settlement in Saunders island took me entirely in the mid of wilderness. I sometimes saw introduced sheep walking around, but all others seemed to be totally native.

マゼランペンギンが沢山いる海岸（↓）を通り過ぎ、丘を登って行くと、、何やら見覚えのある鳥の姿が。。。
After passing by the plain with plenty of Magellanic penguin (see below photo), I saw a 'familiar' bird flying over.

更に車で進むと小さな小屋に辿り着きました。ここがこれから3泊4日を過ごす小屋です。周りに何もありませんが、電気＆浄水器もあり、部屋も綺麗で結構快適でした♪
A few more minutes took me to a small hut where I stayed three nights. There was nothing artificial around the hut, electricity and water was supplied.

ここで車で送ってくれた島の人は島の反対側の家に戻っていったので、既に泊まっていたカップル以外には誰もいません。
そして、、小屋の裏手を見ると何やら鳥が沢山飛んでいます。
Since the driver (resident of the island) came back after dropping me off, no other people other than me and one couple was there. And I noticed many birds were flying behind over the hut.

日本だったらカモメかな？と思うところですが、、ここはフォークランド諸島。全てアホウドリ（マユグロアホウドリ）なのでした！
In Japan, I usually assume seagull. But here is Falkland Islands. All of them were albatross (Black Browed Albatross)!!

圧倒的だったのがその数！！　ガラパゴスやニュージーランド南部でアホウドリを何種か見たことがありますが、、全然桁が違ってました。
What was impressive to me was the number!! In Galapagos islands and southern New Zealand, I have see some kinds of albatross. But number was not so many.

それもそのはず、世界にいる55万～60万ペアいると言われるマユグロアホウドリのうち40万ペアがフォークランド諸島で繁殖しているとの事でした。
Afterward, I knew about 400,000 pairs (out of 550,000-600,000 pairs in total) of Black-browed Albatross were breeding in Falkland Islands.

ちょうど雛が産まれている時期だったので、アチコチで子育て中の親を見ることが出来ました。
ご覧の通り、巣は壷状に固められた泥？でしたが、こんな巣が断崖沿いに幾つもありました。
It was just time when chicks were hatching, and I saw many parents were taking care of chicks. As you can see in below photo, their nests were made of mud. These nest were seen a long with the cliff.

コロニーには放牧地から紛れ込んだ羊の姿もあったり･･･

Sometimes I saw sheep was wondering in the their nesting area.

さて、、アホウドリの仲間は他の鳥と飛び方が少々違います。翼の構造が違っている事に起因していた筈ですが、これにより殆どエネルギーを消費せずにず～っと空を滑空し続ける事ができます。
By the way, albatross flies somewhat in different way from other birds. If I remember correctly, it is due to the difference of born structure of wings. Thanks to this difference, they can fly by spending least energy and be able to glide for a long time.

飛んでいる姿が美しいのもこれが理由なんでしょうね。
Also this may makes their flying silhouette elegant.

因みに翼が大きすぎるせいか、飛び立つ時も着地する時もモタモタしがちでした^^
However since they have huge wings, they were tardy on the ground in general  ;-)

さて、、アホウドリはペアの絆が強い鳥と言われています。
滞在中、ペアが鳴き交わしのような行動をとっているのもよく見かけました。
Albatross is known as a bird that pair has tight relationship. During my stay, I frequently saw a behavior which each of couple was calling to each other.

まず、、一方が他方に向かって鳴きます。
At first, one of them (not sure whether it was male or female) started calling to another.

最初は引き気味だったのが、次第に前向きになってきて。。。
Then another one responded and bend the body forward...

最後はこんな風に嘴を合わせるようにして鳴いていました。 ガラパゴスアホウドリでも同じような行動を見たことがあるので、この辺はアホウドリに共通したものなんでしょうかね？
Finally both of them was calling each other by putting beaks together. In the past, I have seen pair of Galapagos Albatross was taking similar behavior. It may be common behavior in Albatross.

因みに、、それなりの個体数がいるマユグロアホウドリですが、、多くのアホウドリと同じく個体数が減少していて、絶滅が危惧されています。
いつまでも元気の空を飛び回っている姿を見たいですね。
Black-browed Albatross has certain number of population. However, its population is decreasing, like many of other Albatross, and is regarded as 'Endangered'.
I wish they can fly in Falkland Islands forever.

おまけの写真はこちら。。
アホウドリの仲間の多くは長期間が海上で生活をしていて、真水を飲む機会がありません。仕方がないので、海水を飲むのですが、、飲んだ海水を濃縮して水以外の成分を排出しています。それが、、頬の辺りにある切れ込みなのです。
海と関わりが非常に強い鳥ですが、体も海上生活に最適化されているんですね。
By the way, most of albatross spend most of time on the sea. Thus they don't have so many chance to drink freshwater and they usually drink sea water. What is surprising is they excrete concentrated salt after extracting water from incision next to the beak.
So albatross entirely optimize their body for sea surf life!!

FI: Kingdom of Animal ~Prologue~

何か大切なものをアップし忘れている･･･事に気付きました。そう！昨年末～年始に行ったフォークランド諸島の話です！毎年のように年始に海外出張が入るせいで、凄く中途半端になっていました。って事で、、暫くフォークランド諸島の事をつらつらと書いていきます♪　帰国直後に大まかな事を書いていたので、位置関係とかはこちらを見てください^^

I just reminded that I forgot to write something about Falkland Islands where I traveled from end of last 2010 to beginning of 2011. Since I just wrote a few on FI, I will some more about there from now :)

さて、、フォークランド到着直後、ダーウィンと言う居住地に行きました。居住地と書いた心ですが、、街や村と呼べるほど人が住んでいないから　(^^;　ここには６人か8人の人しか住んでいないのです。そして、、その中の一家族が宿をやっていると言うわけなのです。
因みに、、こんな場所はフォークランド諸島の各地にあります。と言うか･･･ここには街は一つしかありません　(^^;
After I arrived at Falkland Islands, I moved to a settlement whose name is Darwin. Here 6 (or 8?) people live in and one family operate accommodation in nice area. In Falkland Islands, settlements are scattered around the country. In another word, there is only one city here.

さて、、ダーウィン周辺に広がっているのは･･･以下のような一面の草原。
Darwin was surrounded with meadows like below.

常時、風が吹き、緯度が高いので木が生えないんですね。以前の日記にも書きましたが、何となく雰囲気はアイスランドに通じるものがあります。
ダーウィン自体にこれと言った見所はないのですが、かつて羊を島から島へと移動させるのに使っていた釣り橋があると聞いて行って来ました。
Since wind blew almost constantly and latitude is high here, no big tree can grow up. For me, this scenery looks like the view of Iceland.
After putting my baggage, I went to see a bridge where people used to move sheep from one island to another.

こうやって写真で見ると分かりませんが、風はかなりキツかったです。なので外洋に面している訳でもないのに、波がかなり立ってます。
「強風にあおられて海に落ちる危険がある注意して！」と言われたのが、ごくごく自然に思えるくらいです。 と言うわけで、、少し離れた場所から、、記念写真を撮ってもらいました　(^^)　
Though it may be difficult to imagine from this photo, wind blew heavily. Though sea was surrounded with many creeks, but its surface was waving. Before I got off the car, I was asked to be very careful not to slip into the water. Actually I could feel the danger with reality.

Then I was taken photo with bridge ;-)

さて、、ここからは歩いて宿まで戻りました。
途中、地雷原の標識を見つつ、、歩いてくると、、
Then I walked back to Darwin. After I walking through mine area,,,

Goose Greenと言う少し大きな居住地に辿り着きました。ここも住民の数は10-20人くらいだったかな？
I saw the entrance of Goose Green where is bigger settlement than Darwin. I forgot the detail, but   population here was about 10-20?

ここに来てちょいちょい鳥の姿が目に入ってきました。
ひとつはこちら。真っ赤なお腹が印象的なオナガマキバドリ。フォークランド諸島の固有種との事です。
After going through entrance, some birds were getting easy to be seen. First species is
Long-tailed Meadowlark which is endemic to Falkland Islands.

こちらも固有種のフォークランドツグミ。見る鳥の殆どが虫の幼虫を加えてました。パッと見た感じ餌が少なさそうですが、、そうでもないんですね
This is also endemic bird to FI 'Falkland Thrush'. Most of birds I saw had larva in their beaks. It seemed less food were available here, it was likely not.

ダーウィンよりは規模が大きいですが、それでも直ぐに一周できてしまいます^^
Here is larger settlement than Darwin. but it did not take so long to walk around.

空を見上げると「アホウドリ！！」と(現地では)思ったオオフルマカモメの姿も。
When I looked up, some Southern Giant Petrels which I mistook as albatross were flying.

夕暮れ時だったので、黄昏た感じに見えました。
All view was in the twilight....

日が傾くと共に体感温度もどんどん下がっていきます。もともと気温が高くない上に常時風が吹いていますからね～
As sun was going to set, the temperature which I felt was getting cooler and cooler. This was no wonder, since temperature itself was not high and wind blew constantly.

道路沿いにあった道路標識。一体何台のドライバーが目にするんでしょうね。今回、スイス、フランス、アルゼンチン、イギリスからの旅行者と知り合いました。観光客の数自体は多くありませんが、下手に観光客を多数呼び寄せて環境を壊して欲しくないな～と思ったりもしました。(まぁ、、キャパが限られているので大丈夫だと思いますが)
Traffic signal which stood along with the road. I simply wondered how many drivers view this signal in a day?  During this travel, I met tourists from Switzerland, France, Argentina and UK. They were nice people and loved Falkland Islands. Actually number of tourists is not so high, but I really wish not so many tourists rush here and collapse this environment.

フォークランドで一番よく見かけた家畜と言うと、、羊でした。と言うよりも環境が厳しくて羊以外は殆ど育たないみたいですね。以前、パタゴニアを旅した時も同じような感じで、肉料理も羊が多かったです。(マトンもラムも大好きなので全然問題ありませんでしたけど)
The most popular farm animal was sheep. I guest here was too hard to live for other animals. When I traveled Patagonia several year before, I had similar sense and often saw mutton or lamb in the menu. (Since I love both of them, I did not have any trouble)

こちらが泊まった宿。宿の人も親切、アットホームで食事も美味しく快適でした。
And accommodation I stayed. People were kind, food was nice and I felt at home.

宿近辺で見かけたチャガシラコバシガンの親子連れとペア。
Around here, I saw several pairs and families of Ruddy-headed goose.

そして、、クロクビムナジロヒメウ
Also Rock Shag.

クリスマス明けの翌朝、ダーウィンから国内線でソーンダース島に向かいました。が、、ダーウィンの近くを見渡しても飛行場等は見当たりません！！　･･･と思っていたら、、近くの牧草地（？）に飛行機が着地しました^^
そう、、ここの国内線はこういった場所を利用して離発着しているんです。少ない人口が各地に散らばって生活しているから、どうしても簡略にせざるをえないんでしょうね
以下の二枚は、、別の日に撮ったものです。
On Dec 26, I flew to Saunders island by domestic flight. In the morning, I simply wondered where the plane touch down and take off. Then, the plane landed on the grassland!
Yes!! all flights which lands suburb area uses these area as runway. Since small number of people lives in various remote area, this seems reasonable.
Below two photos are the one I took another day.

真っ赤な機体が目にしみます
Body was colored in vivid red.

正式な航空会社の名前はFIGAS（Falkland Islands Government Air Service）です。因みに、予約状況から日々コースを変えてアイランドホッピングをしているとの事でした。なので、、自分の飛行機の搭乗時刻は前夜の晩にラジオで放送されます^^
The name of airline is FIGAS （Falkland Islands Government Air Service）. And its route is changed daily to suit for the demand of guests. So announcement of the flight time and route was announced at the night before by radio.

さて、、このFIGASですが、、搭乗して気付いた事が一つありました。
それは･･･飛行高度がむっちゃ低いんです！！　高度は数百m程度ないんじゃないかって感じでした。
During flight, I found the airplane does not fly so high!! I seemed to me a few hundred of meter at the highest.

旅行者の僕にとっては半ば遊覧飛行のようで楽しめました♪因みに飛行機が飛ぶのは人の気配が感じられない原野の上。
For me as a tourist, it was something like a scenic flight and enjoyed very much. In most time, the airplane flew over the uncultivated field where I did not see any human activity.

たまに居住地の上を飛びましたが、、西フォークランドは東フォークランドよりも居住者が少ないそうで、その数はまばらでした。
It sometimes flew over the settlement. Since number of population in west Falkland Islands is smaller than east Falklands Islands, I saw only a few.

どれだけ飛んだか忘れましたが、、途中で一回、僕以外の乗客が乗り降りした後にソーンダース島に到着しました。
I forgot how long it flew, I finally arrived at Saunders island after one stop.

そこは、、野生動物の楽園！なのですが、、飛行機が発着する場所は唯一の居住地で目に入るのは家畜と多少のマゼランペンギンでした　(^^;　因みに、、この島の人口は確か6人くらい。島自体が個人の所有物なんだそうです。
The island was a paradise for wild animals. Since the airplane landed very close to the settlement, animals I saw from there was farm animals and Magellanic penguins. :) By the way, population of this island was about 6, and I heard this island is private. How nice it is!

なんとも長閑な景色ですよね。
ここからオフロードをのろのろ運転で1時間ほど走り、居住地と山を挟んで反対側の小屋まで行きました。
What a peaceful place it is! After driving off-road for one hour, I arrived at a hut which located opposite side of the island beyond the mountain.

そこには、、、本当に素晴らしい景色が広がっていました！
There, very wonderful scenery was spreading!!!!
